PageText=The visual appeal of Julie Moschenross’ wallpapers, textiles and hand-embroidered upholstery is rooted in the art of the dance.
"Dance is the physical expression of human emotion," says Julie, a Toronto-based designer whose work has begun to attract attention. "At its most basic, dance is about instinctive rhythms, harmonious patterns and graceful movement. My experience as a contemporary dancer has inspired me to translate those concepts into elements of design."
As a textile designer, Julie has completed several commissions for wallpaper and is working on a new line of hand-printed wallpaper and hand-embroidered upholstery for interiors. For these, she is creating designs that are a unique and instinctual combination of the abstract and the organic, resulting in a beautiful mix of form, colour and texture.
Julie says that for her, the process of design is physical – as physical as dance itself.
"I love to start with collage," she says. "Collaging allows me to take elements from many different sources – texture, pattern, colour and text – and bring them together to make one cohesive, visually stimulating piece."
She "choreographs" the materials, organizing them until she achieves a pleasing sense of emphasis, balance and repetition.
"The process gets me out of my head and into my own body," she says, adding: "I work until my eye is happy."
Julie Moschenross holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from York University and is a recent graduate of the three-year Textile Design Program at Sheridan College, one of Canada’s top polytechnic institutes. She is based at the Textile Studio at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto, where in 2008 she was given a full-time residency and a one-year scholarship.
Her work has been recognized by awards and scholarships from Sheridan College, The Association of Textile Mill Representatives and The Ontario Crafts Council. She was also recently given the One-of-a-Kind Award for Excellence offered in conjunction with the Textile Museum of Canada.
Julie’s work has been exhibited at several Toronto venues, including IDS, Lennox Contemporary, TOAE, and The Ontario Crafts Council’s gallery on Queen Street West, and is currently sold at Hollace Cluny and Distill.
